One of the things I personally struggle with while eating clean is getting fuel in my body first thing of the morning so that my metabolism can have something to burn.
First I want to talk just briefly about metabolism. Think of your metabolism like a wood burning stove. In order for your heat to stay “on”, you’ve got to keep a log on the fire. If anyone reading this grew up with a wood burning stove, you know how true this statement is. In addition to that, you know that fires tend to burn down to embers overnight and need to be rekindled the following morning. Once again, our bodies are like a wood burning stove. They need some healthy calories first thing of the morning.
I think a lot of us would agree that we also really want coffee first thing of the morning. Coffee is like a warm blanket and a good friend that helps our brains wake up. Unfortunately for most of us, our stomachs aren’t quite that quick to wake up but I’ve come up with a solution!!!
This idea first formed while one of my BFF’s was trying a ketogenic diet. On the ketogenic diet, they suggest putting coconut oil and butter in your coffee. I was adventurous enough to try the coconut oil because well…coconut oil is basically everything…and so this concoction was born.
These are the glorious items that I use in my morning coffee:
Why these items you ask? Well I’m so glad you did!!!
Coffee – Well first of all it’s coffee and my brain needs it and second of all, I needed a delivery system for my coconut oil. I tried just eating a spoonful of coconut oil for my metabolism and GAG!!! As much as I love and swear by coconut oil, I just couldn’t do it. Yack!!!
Stevia and Vanilla – No real reason. They just taste good.
Almond Milk – This stuff is the Bees Knees!!! I am totally on the Almond Milk bandwagon fo life! Not only is it DELICIOUS, it has 50% more calcium than dairy milk and still enough vitamin D to make sure you are getting enough and that your body absorbs all that bone-building calcium!! A lot of dairy can spell disaster for a lot of people (i.e. Heather Honto) so this is a fantastic and delicious alternative.
Cinnamon – I was hesitant to try cinnamon in my coffee for a long time until last fall when all thing pumpkin happened and I realized that the cinnamon taste is what I was really craving. I also found out that cinnamon helps stabilize blood sugar which in turn helps control appetite and I need all the help I can get in that area considering I want to gnaw my arm off most of the day. I actually sprinkle the cinnamon in with my coffee grounds so that it’s not actually in my coffee because cinnamon never dissolves.
Coconut Oil – Coconut oil will fire up your metabolism, This stuff really is a superfood. It has the fat to give your body some fuel and as long as you use extra virgin, unrefined, organic coconut oil, it is the kind of really good fat that lowers cholesterol and helps stabilize blood sugar. I use 1 tablespoon. I still have a coffee pot so I just put my coconut oil in the pot and it melts while the coffee is brewing. Make sure you stir it really well. Between the coffee and the coconut oil, this stuff gives you the swift kick in the pants most of us need to get going in the mornings!!!

*An added bonus is that this concoction is great for um waking up a “slow” digestive track if you know what I mean 😉
